In the year 2021, H.E., the President of the Republic of Uganda, directed the use of wetlands in Uganda, and due to economic issues, it has caused a lot of challenges among the wetland-dependent communities in Uganda. HORARD in her quest to promote community livelihoods for the former wetland-dependent communities has developed a project called Climate Resilient Community Cooperatives Aquaculture Integration (CReCCAI) and mobilised ninety-one (91) community associations, groups and SACCOs around the lakes and wetlands.
HORARD has a running Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE) to, among other handle the following:
We have mobilised and registered a women's SACCO in Kwania district called Ka Iromo women SACCO with membership of 100 women. With support and guidance from HORARD, we have now sunk 8 earthen ponds raising African Catfish and tilapia. We have also introduced farm integration to promote outcomes and revenue, although there are still capacity gaps that we need to address to help the group realise its objectives.
HORARD has developed a comprehensive plan for community aquaculture and the promotion of livelihoods for vulnerable wetland-dependent communities.
